About

The Global Consortium of Coastal Universities, previously known as the Global U8 (GU8) Consortium, was launched in 2004 and is a unique model of global collaboration between prestigious higher education institutions located in coastal cities.

The GCU Consortium is an alliance of universities from around the world whose objective is a dynamic and distinctive collaboration, building innovative curricular and research programmes.

The GCU Consortium has a future-oriented approach and places great importance on international and multi-cultural partnership working, looking beyond the traditional bilateral relationships between universities.

The GCU Consortium focuses principally on three interdisciplinary area: logistics and maritime affairs, environmental sustainability and renewable energy and global business. All GU8 members strive to advance worldwide knowledge in these areas of common expertise. We pursue excellence, focus on sustainability and responsible leadership, and impact these values through our students, researchers and partners.

Why the Global Consortium of Coastal Universities, previously known as the Global U8 (GU8) Consortium was created

The GCU Consortium was proposed at a time when major challenges confound higher education, stemming from globalisation and the resulting complexity and competitiveness of both labour market and product markets, coupled with the increasing rapidity of technological change.

The world is shrinking and local, national, and regional economies have become interlocked and dependent on each other due to developments in communication technology and the free movement of capital across national borders.

Education is a global enterprise, and the GCU is tasked with building bridges across longstanding cultural boundaries and academic disciplines. Such collaboration is a leadership vehicle for envisioning and preparing for the needs likely to emerge in the future.

The GCU Consortium will give allied institutions several key advantages that are complementary, cost-saving and, above all, beneficial from an educational perspective.
